Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
What is IBS and could hypnotherapy work as treatment?
“IBS is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain and an abnormal pattern of bowel movements (i.e. diarrhoea, constipation or mixed diarrhoea and constipation). Hypnotherapy could provide benefit for IBS, by affecting parts of the brain that experience abdominal pain or influence the movement of the bowel” (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence).
“Hypnotherapy is successful in approximately 70% of patients which is a lot better than most treatments for IBS. We have been unable to predict those who will and those who won’t respond so we say to people they should just try it and see, especially as there are no side effects”(Professor Peter Whorwell – South Manchester Functional Bowel Service).
The above quotations indicate the value of hypnotherapy in helping with IBS which is ideal for treatment with hypnosis, as there is no structural damage to the body. During hypnotherapy people learn how to influence and gain control of their gut function and then seem to be able to change the way the brain reacts to their gut activity.
It is not known what causes IBS. Stress or emotional upset may play a role. In the HypnoHut we will help you to identify if it has been brought on by a stressful event in your life. Symptoms tend to become worse during times of stress or anxiety.
