Phobias are extremely common. There will usually be strong avoidance behaviour connected with the phobia, and feelings of anxiety, loss of control and panic. Sufferers usually know their fear is irrational, but they cannot control it.
There are many possible causes of phobias, examples are:
- A phobia may be associated with a particular incident or trauma
- In may cases phobias are caused before the client reaches the age of 8 or 9. it may have been learnt from seeing the reaction of a parent or sibling to a situation.
- In some cases, phobias can be inherited
The subconscious has the role of helping us to and keeping us safe and healthy. When it is faced with potential danger or harm it feels it necessary to do what it can to help us. It does not realise that often a phobia occurs when there appears no real danger.
Hypnotherapy access the subconscious to react to the particular object or situation they once feared in a calmer manner when encountering it in the future. Phobias are displaced fears and because they are not rational, they can be dealt with.
